The misuse of Haiti's water supply has caused water deprivation in some parts of the country. Lack of water aggravates illness and causes crops to die, compounding the poverty of Haiti. Water policies and water conservation combined will help improve the water situation in Haiti.
Do you put any thought into the water supply of your country? If you are like most people, you only worry if you turn on the faucet and nothing comes out. Even then, your first thought is, "Did I forget to pay the water bill?" You don't worry about what is in the water, either. You assume that it is comparatively healthy for you and your family. There are countries around the world, though, where the health of citizens is significantly impacted by the water supply. One of these countries that is in trouble is Haiti. The misuse of Haiti's water supply is causing trouble for people today.
Haiti is a small Caribbean country that occupies one-third of the island of Hispaniola and is comprised of several other islands as well. This country is 10,714 square miles and it is home to 8.5 million people. These people are in danger because the misuse of Haiti's water supply. The mismanagement of the water supply in Haiti means that the water is not getting to the citizens like they need and want. This misuse of clean water causes many of the citizens of Haiti to turn to water supplies that are not fit for use due to harmful contaminants.
Due to the increase in Haiti's population, this historic misuse of Haiti's water supply is a big problem. The citizens can't get the water that they need for their personal use much less enough to water and tend their crops and livestock. This causes crops to fail and animals to be sick or die, which compounds the problem of poverty and disease in this country.
Why is there a misuse of Haiti's water supply? Mainly from lack of education and planning, lulling people into thinking water is an abundant resource. There aren't any water management policies in place to help get the water to the citizens in both urban and rural areas. This lack of policy is the big reason why there is such a big water supply problem in this country. There are many different groups trying to take control of the water supply and because there is not a concentrated and focused effort to manage the water supply, the people are suffering.
There are some things that are being done to help counteract the misuse of Haiti's water supply. One is the use of wind powered water pumps to help get water to some of the people to use for their drinking and to help water their crops. This helps them to not be dependent upon government policies and they can take control of the water supply in their area. This has made a huge impact upon the water supply in many different areas of Haiti.
The issue isn't that there is not enough water for the citizens of Haiti, though that of course is always a reality. The real issue is that the water isn't being effectively managed to service the citizens of this country. This is a sad thing. If there were some official water policies in this country, then the misuse of Haiti's water supply would be alleviated and the people would have the water supply that they desperately need and want.
