Water Supply

Your water supply has several levels. The biggest level is the source of water. The closest supply is that which comes into your home or office. Your water supply is at risk, both from the source to the water that comes through your faucets. Pay attention to water conservation to keep water coming into your home, but also pay attention to what's put into the water to make it potable.

How much thought do you put into your area's water supply? Generally, you probably think about it only when you turn on the faucet. If it comes out, then all is good with your water supply, isn't it? You may think so, but it is most likely not true and it is definitely not true around the world. Yes, you have water to drink. Is it healthy for you and your family? This is where the problem comes in. Your water supply may be somewhat plentiful, but it may not be as healthy as you would want.

What is in your water supply? It is dependent upon where you live, but your water supply may contain many things that can affect your health. The thing that is even more concerning is that your water may be contaminated by something that is used by the water treatment plants to make the water cleaner. This means that the chlorine or chloramines that are sometimes used to purify the water can also cause you health problems. What kind of health problems can your water supply cause?

  • Chlorine: Chlorine is put into the water to help purify it further after it is treated at the water treatment plant, partially to help it stay "clean" while it is in the distribution system. Unfortunately, it has also been linked with bladder, rectal, and breast cancers, as well as atherosclerosis. This is why many water treatment plants have decided to change their purification method to chloramines.
  • Chloramines:
Chloramines are what many water treatment plants are using to help prevent the health affects that chlorine may have. Unfortunately, though, chloramines come with their own problems. If you are on dialysis, then it can be fatal to you, which is why it is important to determine what purification method that your water treatment plant uses.

  • There are other things in your water supply that you want to be aware of too. One of these pollutants is lead. Lead can get into your water supply via the pipes in your home. This makes a tap water filter necessary to keep your drinking water supply healthy. Lead can cause severe problems for the unborn child and children, including death, so it is important to use a water filter if your pipes are made from lead. The best way to determine this is to have your water supply tested to ensure that your water is as safe as possible for you and your family.

Water supplies around the world are becoming more and more polluted. This includes rivers, streams, oceans, and lakes. These bodies of water are being polluted by numerous things, including our activities on land. Bacteria and viruses, particulates, sewage, and chemicals are just a few of the things that are polluting our water supply all over the world. By learning more about what is in our water supply, we can begin to make changes to help make our water supply healthier for us, our family, the environment, and the world.
